Thanks for reading!

Are blogs even a thing anymore? Lately I’ve heard pronouncements that the future of the Internet is in micro-texts and images. I think we’re already firmly there. I mean, have you heard of Instagram or Twitter? Hello!

Instagram, in particular, is a digital arena that has drawn in content creators like a magnet. Exchanges happen so quickly. A photo posted is spontaneous and real… or is it highly curated, undeclared advertising? In response, there is engagement – emoticons or ‘likes’, as stripped back and effortless as you can get.

The merry-go-round speeds up, only the metal is rusty and the joints creak. But it’s shiny and glittery and so, so pretty. It’s a carnival for which we need a new media literacy, something I might post more about another time.

Let’s time travel, shall we? Back in the first decade of the century, I regularly read a whole bunch of blogs. I even wrote my own blog as I backpacked around the world and lived hand to mouth. Few of these blogs remain as active today. And I’ve also forgotten so many of them. People move on, close up shop, change names.

In the heyday of blogging, these websites were unmediated spaces where women writers could publish long-form content and host discussions with readers in the comments. I like to think that blogs connected to centuries-old traditions in women’s writing, wherein letters and diaries were vehicles through which women made sense of their lives, corresponded with others and preserved moments in time.

Blogging is a form I still find worthy of consideration. It’s the perfect outlet for the kind of writing I want to do now and can be fitted around the demands of parenting a small child. I can shape my thoughts by composing text and I can be brave and vulnerable and put it out there. I get to play the roles of writer, editor and publisher while I’m on the couch in tracksuit pants and my daughter sleeps downstairs.

Now there are only a few personal blogs I look at weekly. Sometimes a stray post crops up on a blog I used to read regularly and it’s exciting. But I’m really missing a plurality of voices posting content with more depth. What about you? What do you think? Are there any blogs that you can recommend?
